2 Knowledge: Overview

Every era has a framework so obvious it feels like seeing rather than thinking (caloric, the ether, the assumption that matter is dark inside) and the pattern by which such frameworks dissolve is specific, repeatable, and happening now.
“We used to think X, now we know Y” marks genuine progress while quietly discarding whatever the old framework was correctly pointing at, so that the phenomenon is lost along with the mechanism, unnamed and unexamined.
When someone says a process is “just” doing something, the word has quietly claimed that naming the mechanism is the same as explaining the experience, a claim that is never argued, only assumed, while one small word does all the philosophical work.
If you walk down the scale from human to insect to atom, at some point you say “obviously nothing is home,” but you cannot say where or why, and the question may be malformed because experience was never absent, only scaled beyond recognition.
Nothing was added, no Aunt Hillary molecule, no special ingredient, the numbers just got large enough that a different kind of thing appeared, and whether that thing has an inside scaled to its complexity is the question that haunts all emergence.
A perfectly uniform universe would have stayed featureless forever; it is the random fluctuation, amplified by a force that won’t let small differences stay small, that built galaxies, dunes, snowflakes, and eyes.
The cell’s molecules are replaced every few hours and yet the cell persists, because what defines it is not its material but the circular process, components producing the network that produces the components, that figured out, three billion years ago, how not to stop.
